I recently read an article titled "Do What They Think You Can't Do" taken from a commencement address given at Ricks College on April 21, 1988. It was given by, at the time, Bishop Henry B. Eyring.
In this article Bishop Eyring talks about 3 keys to lifelong learning they are:
1. Know that you are a child of God
2. Be teachable
3. Be clean
I would like to talk a little about each of these.
First, Know that you are a Child of God. By knowing where you come from and what your potential is you will know that you can learn anything. We all have the potential to become Gods. To do this we have to live worthily on this earth and obey the commandments so we can realize our true potential. By knowing we can become like God we must know there isn't anything we can't learn and retain if we put in the effort.
Bishop Eyring said " Most people stop learning out of fear. They are afraid they cannot learn. You need never have that fear if you are faithful.
When Bishop Eyring talks about learning I don't think he is just referring to learning in a classroom. He is talking about learning everyday in all situation.
Second, Be teachable. We need to have an open mind and be willing to learn. I think we need to become like little children. Children are like sponges always ready to be taught and then go and find out for themselves if what is being taught is correct if they have doubts. one way they do this by going to a trusted person (parent, grandparent, teacher, God) and talking to them.
Third, Be clean. Bishop Eyring goes on to talk about how living a clean life by obeying all of the commandments will let the Holy Ghost dwell with us. He said "living a clean life will allow the Holy Ghost to confirm and expand your learning."
At the times in my life when I am most in tune with the spirit it is easier for me to listen, understand, and learn what messages are being portrayed.
I know that it is important to gain as much knowledge as possible throughout our lives. Knowledge is the only thing we can take with us through the resurrection. It is through our knowledge, lessons learned, and experiences that we are able to teach and raise our children. The more we know the better person we can become. I know we can become better parents and examples if we use our knowledge to live the way the Lord wants us to.
I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Beautiful Testimony. I love those 3 things Bishop Eyring shared. I appreciate you sharing these things with me.
